Original Poem in Assamese

English Translation

Silent Tears

Its been long since I visited home
The yearning that gathers secretly within
Is slowly turning to despair
Childhood beckons and so does youth
Come darling Sonpahi, fill the house with your reverberating laughter
Come and bring some relief to Aai’s stressed eyes
Days and months are rolling by
Losing the sense of time and years
Perhaps the house I was born in is worn out
The fragrance of my homestead
The music in its air
The Gooseberry plant in my backyard
The Pomelo tree in the yard
Time could not erase any of them
Heart grows suddenly heavy
As Aai’s face flashes into my mind
My breathing turn to a sigh
Amidst endless excuses
You must not  travel while expecting
I understood the logic
Change of weather will make the newborn sick
To the summer heat don’t expose your loving child
To infectious diseases
The paddy in the field is
 ready for harvest
Days and months roll by
Lost the sense of  time and years
Only excuses do not seem to end
My loving mother is perishing in her sick bed
The crow caws
She walks to the gate
The train blows a whistle
She loses her sleep
With hope in her heart
She sends some love to her daughter
My heart weeps secretly
Dearest Aai, do not be sad
I live bearing you in every breathe.

Title: 2020 and beyond

By Priyanka Gogoi

What a ruckus of a year

2020 has been so far!

The world is at stand still.

Daily grind is a task uphill.

A century old curse is back.

Life falls off like deck of cards,

mortal remains are left alone,

without a kiss or last goodbyes.

The streets are ominously silent;

we are trapped behind walls;

knowing not what might befall

for freedom comes with a price.

With shields and masks,

and powerful magic potions,

people are clad from head to toe

fighting a terror unseen, unheard.

But, how ruthless can an enemy be?

It kills and spares none;

from babies to frail bodies,

it sniffs and licks them all.

The mind dwells in fear,

yet the heart refuse to give up;

for it knows we all seek to belong

someone to hold, to talk, to touch.

Can we be any different

or more truer than our flaws?

Isn’t it humane to be human,

or to cry the same tears?

Now that we are in caves,

man-made and otherwise,

our children watch us close;

the little things count the most.

For now let’s do what we can

and not think of what we can’t.

Tell them what no one else will tell,

that they are okay, whole on their own.

Show them love grows with love;

Whether give it to a plant, bird or a friend.

And that, each time when you do,

you’re kind to self and others too.

You are the change that you seek,

not the words that you speak;

but what matters is you walk the talk,

where you might pause but not stop.

What is lost may not be found

However we can count what we’ve got.

The new feels as scary as it can be,

our spirit though is brave and renewed.

The end of the year is imminent if not near.

A brand new chapter waits to unfurl.

Hope we carry our lessons along

and stay grateful for we got lucky to learn.

New Path

[ Translated into English from original Tripuri ]

By Kunal Debbarman

I don’t have the ability to walk a long way

I don’t have the ability to cross the seven seas.

I don’t even have the ability to remember the willpower,

I worry day by day about that;

If I get tired in the middle of the way

The fear of getting lost keeps running through my mind

Yet, I’m moving forward by pulling

willpower of my mind itself.

I’m just moving forward to find a new path.

The storms of life may come abruptly,

But we should never be stagnant in the path of life.

Our future at the top of the drew-drenched mountain

We’ve to climb the mountain and catch our future.

We’ve to build our own idol

As, we are the inventor of ourselves

We’ve to build our own path

to get a brighter future.

Where there will be only the wind of victory

around of us

Where life’s beautiful flowers bloom.

As the dawn of a new day is nearing us

Get ready to greet the new day.

The new sun will rise again among us;

By illuminating the dark days.

The mind will be captivated by

the “JADU KOLIJA”(tripuri folk song) song,

We shall make a new path

Let the movement of time flow like this.
